early morning blues

This song arguably went through the biggest transformation in the studio. First, it began life in 6/8 time. We morphed the time into a driving 4/4 and things started to fall into place. Secondly, it never really had a chorus. We thought it did, but then Aaron added the high vocal “I’ve got them early morning blues” over top of the old lyric (which was then booted off the island), and all of the sudden it felt like a hook.

Instead of a click track, Freddie played drums to a slowed down loop of “Five to One” by the Doors. Some of the best drummers I know don’t like to play to click tracks, preferring more musical loops. But Freddie goes the extra mile to find loops (sometimes more than one per song) that will help him get inside the groove of the song. And that’s why he’s THE Freddie Berman. We thought about keeping The Doors loop in the mix at a really low level but decided against it. Or did we? Also in the bridge we were going for a spaghetti western vibe.
