Freddie came up with the concept to record each percussive element to this song separately and layer it together. In other words, we recorded the song all the way through with just the kick drum, then the snare drum, then the toms, stick clicks, cymbals, congas, etc. There is no real drum set part, so he had to put a lot of thought into which parts he covers on the kit when we perform this song live. Especially since the song can be heard in two different time signatures. I’m considering sharing a version with just drums/percussion and vocals. Those elements ARE the song.
Aaron convinced me to add a tight slap-back delay to the lead vocal. I was especially resistant when he referenced “In the Air Tonight,” (which is one of my least favorite songs of all time). But the effect worked well on this song, and again, a lesson in being open to an idea that immediately gave me a negative reaction before even trying it.
In the 2nd verse, Keyboard Wizard Logan Roth does a very cool Latin thing on the keys. It’s tucked a bit in the mix, and finding the proper volume for this part was deceptively challenging. It had to brighten up the 2nd verse without being distracting.
